The Age on Your Birth Certificate Isn’t the Age Your Body Acts

You probably know someone who is 75, walks everywhere, takes the stairs without thinking and remembers every grandchild’s birthday. You probably also know someone who is 60 and moves as if every step costs them something. They’ve had the same number of birthdays, but their bodies are very different. That difference is what Qi Gong and aging is really about.

That gap has a name. The age on paper is your birth-certificate age. The age your body acts, meaning how well it moves, thinks, sleeps and recovers, is called your functional age. The first number never changes. The second one is partly in your hands.

Two cars from the same year

Think of two cars made in the same year. One was driven hard, never serviced and left out in the rain. The other was looked after. Twenty years later, one still starts first time on a cold morning and the other needs a push.

The papers show the same year for both, but they are very different cars. Your body works the same way.

What Chinese medicine says makes us old

In Chinese medicine, aging isn’t about wrinkles. It’s about the organs slowly losing strength.

The Kidneys hold the body’s deep reserve, which Chinese medicine calls Jing. Think of it as savings in the bank that you draw on your whole life. Spend it faster than you top it up and the body starts to show it.

Each organ looks after things you notice as the years go by:

  • Kidneys: bones, joints, hearing and your deep reserve of energy
  • Liver: tendons, flexibility, eyesight and how well you handle stress
  • Spleen: digestion, and how the body turns food into energy
  • Lungs: immunity, skin and stamina
  • Heart: circulation, clear thinking and a steady mood

When the organs stay strong, the body doesn’t wear down in the same way. That’s the link between Qi Gong and aging: Qi Gong works on the organs one by one to keep blood moving through them and to keep them doing their job.

The stress that speeds everything up

Your body has two modes. One is “under attack” mode, like a smoke alarm going off. Muscles tighten, breathing gets shallow, and blood is pulled away from digestion and repair and sent to the muscles so you can run. That’s exactly right in a real emergency.

The trouble is that most adults live there all day. A body where the alarm never switches off never gets round to its repairs.

The other mode is “rest and repair”. Qi Gong switches the body into this mode. Blood goes back to the organs, muscles loosen, digestion starts working again and sleep gets deeper. This is when the body repairs itself.

Blood flow: the kinked garden hose

With age, circulation slows down. Think of a garden hose with a kink in it. Water still comes out, but the plants at the far end only get a trickle.

In your body, the far end is the joints, the skin and the tiny vessels inside the organs. Qi Gong’s spiralling, opening, closing and lengthening movements, done with deep breathing, keep the water flowing all the way to the end of the hose. Chinese medicine puts it simply: where Qi flows, blood follows.

Your organs stiffen too

People feel old partly because their joints stiffen. But the organs stiffen too.

Every organ has vessels, valves, ducts and a thin wrapping of connective tissue called fascia. It’s a bit like the thin skin around each segment of an orange. With the years, this tissue loses its stretch and the organ can’t move and work the way it used to.

Qi Gong’s spiralling movements, deep breathing and gentle squeeze-and-release keep this tissue soft and moving. Valves can open and close properly, ducts can drain and the organ can expand and settle naturally. An organ that keeps its movement keeps working like a younger organ.

What the research on Qi Gong and aging found

Here is what studies of Qi Gong and aging have measured.

  • Thirty years of Qi Gong. Researchers in Shanghai followed 242 people with high blood pressure for 30 years. Half of them did Qi Gong for 30 minutes twice a day. In the Qi Gong group, deaths and strokes were about half what they were in the other group. After 30 years, about 7 in 10 of the Qi Gong group were still alive, compared with just over half of the others.
  • The Kidney signs of aging. In the same research, 30 men aged 50 to 69 did Qi Gong for a year. The signs Chinese medicine links to tired Kidneys were cut roughly in half: aching, dizziness, poor sleep, hair loss and bladder trouble. Men and women in the programme also saw their hormone levels (the body’s chemical messengers) move back towards those of healthy people their own age.
  • The body’s own clean-up crew. Just living creates wear and tear inside your cells, the way cooking leaves dishes in the sink. The body makes its own substance to clear it up. When 200 retirees aged 52 to 76 were tested, the ones who did Qi Gong every day had about 60% more of it than the ones who didn’t.
  • Stronger and quicker on their feet. Seventeen studies looked at more than 1,000 older people who were losing muscle with age. After Qi Gong they had a stronger grip (the strength you use to open a jar), got up from a chair faster and walked faster.
  • Sharper memory. Seven studies looked at 539 older people, average age 67, whose memory had started to slip. They practised Baduanjin, a set of Qi Gong movements, for about an hour a few times a week over 3 to 6 months. Their memory and overall thinking improved.
  • Qi Gong compared with walking. 100 people with an average age of 63 who were showing early signs of age-related decline were split into two groups for six months. One group did Qi Gong and the other walked or jogged. In the Qi Gong group, 8 of the 14 main signs improved by more than 80%. In the walking group, none improved by more than 45%.

Qi Gong is not something “old people do”

The biggest misunderstanding about Qi Gong and aging is that Qi Gong is something you start when you’re older. The truth is the opposite: the earlier you start, the younger your body stays.

Qi Gong is meant to be started in your 20s, 30s and 40s. You don’t need to be sick or stiff. The point is to keep the body from ever reaching that stage. Starting early means:

  • stress never builds up to damaging levels
  • your fascia never goes rigid
  • your joints stay open and moving
  • your digestion stays strong
  • your sleep stays deep

People who have done Qi Gong for many years don’t just “look good for their age.” Their bodies act younger because the wear and tear never got the chance to speed up.

Try it

You can’t read about Qi Gong. You have to feel it.

People often tell me that the Starter Masterclass answered all the questions they had, and showed them what Qi Gong is really about. I can’t give you that in words, not even in a Zoom consultation with me. Qi Gong is something you experience in your own body.

So my advice is simple: start the Starter Masterclass and try it for yourself. If it isn’t for you, you have 14 days to swap it for another masterclass or get a full refund.

Qi Gong doesn’t heal you. Your body heals you. Qi Gong wakes that ability up.
