The Remarkable Ability of the Body to Revive Itself: What CPR Reveals About Our Built-In Pharmacy

The most dramatic rescue in all of medicine is performed with two hands and nothing else.

No drugs. No equipment. No training beyond an afternoon course. A neighbour can do it. A teacher can do it. A fifteen-year-old can do it. And it works — not because of anything the rescuer brings to the scene, but because of what is already inside the person lying on the floor.

I found myself explaining this at a friend's house over Shabbat dinner. Her teenage son wanted to know how Medical Qi Gong reaches the organs and the nervous system and the whole internal chemistry of a person, when all you seem to be doing is moving.

So I told him what I tell everyone:

A pharmacy is full of copies. Adrenaline, cortisone, insulin, thyroxine, melatonin, painkillers that work on the very same receptors as your own endorphins — your body already makes its own version of all of them. Qi Gong doesn't add anything from outside. It gets the body producing its own.

He stared at me. So I gave him the proof, and the proof is CPR.

Nobody has ever restarted a heart

This is the part that gets missed every single time CPR is explained: CPR does not bring anyone back. It buys the body time so the body can bring itself back.

Walk through what actually happens and you can see it at every step.

1. Before anyone does anything, the body has already acted

By the time a rescuer kneels down, the body has shut off everything non-essential and pulled what it has left toward the brain. Nobody triggered that. Nobody instructed it. At the very edge of life, the body is still running its own emergency plan.

2. Chest compressions — pushing, not restarting

Hard and fast in the centre of the chest, 100 to 120 times a minute. That pushing sends blood to the brain, carries oxygen to the organs, feeds the heart muscle itself, moves the emergency hormones the body is already releasing, and keeps pressure inside the heart.

Notice what it does not do. There is no button. Compressions hold the conditions steady, and the heart does its own restarting.

3. Rescue breaths — handing over the raw material

Often compressions alone are enough, and for most untrained bystanders that is exactly what is recommended. Where breaths are given — drowning, children, a breathing emergency — the rescuer opens the airway and puts air into the lungs.

That is all. Oxygen reaches the blood, the brainstem senses it and begins trying to breathe again, carbon dioxide clears, the heart muscle steadies. Nobody is breathing for the person. They are handed the raw material, and their own system takes it from there.

4. The defibrillator is a reset, not a jump-start

This is the one almost everyone has backwards, thanks to television.

A defibrillator cannot start a stopped heart. It helps only when the heart is still electrically alive but the signals have gone scrambled. Where there is no electrical activity at all, a shock has nothing to work with.

Think of the router at home. You can press reset only while it is on. If it is switched off at the wall, pressing reset does nothing whatsoever. The heart is the same.

And even then, compressions come first — in hospitals too. The machine itself says it out loud: begin CPR, continue compressions, do not stop. It will not deliver a shock unless it finds a rhythm that can answer one.

5. The moment the body switches itself back on

People call it “coming back”. What is really happening is a sequence the body runs by itself: enough oxygen arrives, the heart's own pacemaker starts firing again, the muscle answers those signals, blood pressure steadies, the brainstem picks breathing back up, and consciousness returns.

Its own pacemaker — that is worth stopping on. Most people hear the word and picture a device implanted in someone's chest. Every heart already has one: a small cluster of cells in the heart wall, generating its own electricity, firing without waiting to be told by the brain, keeping time for an entire lifetime.

That is why a heart can start again after CPR. Not because of the rescuer. Because of what was already in there.

So what was the rescuer actually doing?

Holding the conditions. Circulation moving, oxygen arriving, pressure maintained — long enough for the body to do the part that only the body can do.

That is the whole of it. And it is proof of something far bigger than an emergency: the body knows how to heal itself. The rescuer is only keeping it going long enough to get on with the job.

The same thing, on an ordinary Tuesday

That is what Medical Qi Gong is for. Qi Gong doesn’t heal you. Your body heals you. Qi Gong wakes that ability up — the same ability CPR puts on display in the worst ten minutes of someone’s life, working on an ordinary day instead.

Every movement in Medical Qi Gong, every breath pattern, every sequence is chosen to do a job: to move blood and lymph, to open the chest, to work a specific organ and its meridian, to take the nervous system off high alert.

Give the body those conditions and it starts producing:

  • calming neurotransmitters
  • anti-inflammatory chemistry
  • digestive enzymes
  • the hormones for repair and deep sleep
  • the regulators that steady metabolism

That is the view from the inside. From the outside it is far more ordinary, and it is what people are actually after when they come to a class. Shoulders that have been somewhere up near the ears since Sunday, coming down. Getting into bed and falling asleep, instead of lying there going through tomorrow. Reaching four in the afternoon with something still in the tank. Digestion quietly getting on with its job instead of announcing itself after every meal.

And it does not take weeks to show up. Inside a single class the breath drops lower, the shoulders come down, the mind quietens. That is not mood. That is the nervous system changing which setting it is running on, in minutes — the same speed the body shows in an emergency, pointed at an ordinary day instead.

CPR and Qi Gong sit at opposite ends of a life: one a catastrophe, one a Tuesday morning. They run on the identical principle.

Give the body the right conditions, and the body knows what to do.

All any of us ever do — with two hands on a chest, or with movement in a living room — is give it the conditions.

Try it

You can’t read about Qi Gong. You have to feel it.

People often tell me that the Starter Masterclass answered all the questions they had, and showed them what Qi Gong is really about. I can’t give you that in words, not even in a Zoom consultation with me. Qi Gong is something you experience in your own body.

So my advice is simple: start the Starter Masterclass and try it for yourself. If it isn’t for you, you have 14 days to swap it for another masterclass or get a full refund.

The body is not fragile. The body is brilliant. And the body is built to heal.
