Low Iron, Even When You're Taking Iron: Why Absorption Matters More Than Intake
You had a blood test, and your iron came back low. You were told to take iron, so you did. Maybe you started eating more red meat, spinach and lentils too. And at the next blood test, the number had barely moved.
This is very common, and it's a clue. If the number isn't moving, it's worth asking a different question: not how much iron goes in, but how much your body can actually use.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, low iron is rarely a simple shortage. It usually means the body is struggling to turn food into nourishment, or to use what it already has.
Think of watering a garden where the soil has gone hard. You can pour on as much water as you like, but most of it runs off. The problem isn't the water. It's whether the ground can take it in.
Blood is made, not just measured
In Chinese medicine, blood isn't something you simply "have". Your body makes it and renews it every day, and it builds it from three things:
- good digestion
- smooth circulation
- enough rest and recovery
When these work well, blood is replaced by itself. When they're under strain, iron can fall even when your diet and supplements look right on paper.
The Spleen: turning food into nourishment
In Chinese medicine, the Spleen's job is to break food down and turn it into something your body can use.
If the Spleen is weak:
- food isn't fully digested
- less of it is absorbed
- the body builds blood slowly
Typical signs include:
- feeling tired after meals
- bloating or loose stools
- a foggy head
- a pale face
- low iron even though you eat iron-rich food
Western medicine sees the same picture from another side. Before your gut can take in the iron from food, stomach acid has to change it into the right form. It's like a key that has to be cut before it fits the lock. When digestion is weak, most of that iron passes straight through.
Low iron here isn't about how much you eat. It's about how much you absorb and use.
Blood deficiency: the result, not the cause
In Chinese medicine, low iron often shows up as Blood deficiency. That means the blood isn't rich enough to fully nourish the body. It can show up as:
- dizziness
- a racing or fluttering heart
- anxiety
- dry skin or hair
- brittle nails
- poor or restless sleep
Blood doesn't only feed your muscles and organs. It also helps your nervous system feel settled. When blood is thin, you can feel it in your body and in your mood.
The Liver: sending blood where it's needed
In Chinese medicine, "the Liver stores Blood" doesn't mean the liver holds blood like a container. It means the Liver manages where your blood goes:
- when you're resting and when you're active
- when you're stressed and when you're relaxed
- through the menstrual cycle
When you rest, blood is meant to be held and saved. When you're active, it's meant to flow freely.
Long-term stress disrupts this. When your body thinks there's an emergency, it's like a kitchen when the smoke alarm goes off: everyone stops cooking. Digestion is put on hold and blood is sent elsewhere. The nutrients may be there, but they aren't delivered or used well.
That's why long-term stress can be linked to falling iron, even when your diet is good.
Periods and ongoing blood loss
Chinese medicine doesn't see heavy or long periods as simply "low iron causing bleeding". More often, they point to:
- digestion that can't rebuild blood fast enough
- blood flow that isn't well regulated
- not enough recovery between cycles
In these cases, iron keeps dropping because blood is lost faster than the body can replace it.
Cold slows digestion
Chinese medicine teaches that cold slows digestion down and tightens it. Cold food and drinks make it harder to break food down and take nutrients from it, especially when iron is already low.
That's why Chinese medicine recommends:
- warm, cooked meals
- soups, stews and porridge
- going easy on iced drinks and lots of raw food
This matters most in winter, after an illness, after giving birth, and whenever you're run down.
Where Qi Gong comes in
Qi Gong doesn't heal you. Your body heals you. Qi Gong wakes that ability up.
With low iron, that ability is digestion, circulation, and your body's switch out of stress mode. Medical Qi Gong works on all three:
- it strengthens the Spleen's ability to process food
- it brings more blood to the digestive organs and moves it through the whole body
- it takes the nervous system out of constant stress mode and into rest-and-repair, which is when digestion does its work
The same food gives you more nourishment, and your body makes better use of the same iron. That's why some people see their iron go up without changing their diet or supplements. Their body has become better at using what it already gets.
It happened to me. My iron was very low, and from doing Medical Qi Gong, without any supplements, it's now at a normal, healthy level.
Which masterclasses help with low iron
Medical Qi Gong doesn't work on iron itself. It works on the organs that build blood.
If you're new to Qi Gong, start with the Qi Gong Starter Masterclass. It calms the nervous system, improves circulation and helps your body take in nourishment. When your body is no longer stuck in stress mode, it absorbs and uses much more of what you eat. Everything else builds on this.
If you already practise, these are the masterclasses I recommend when iron is low:
- Qi Gong for Healthy Digestion. Works with the organs that process food, so your body takes in more nourishment and turns it into blood. Most useful when iron stays low even though you eat well.
- Qi Gong for Spring (Liver). Smooths circulation and helps your body handle stress. Most useful when low iron comes with ongoing tension, poor circulation or heavy periods.
- Qi Gong for Winter (Kidneys). Builds deep reserves. Most useful after blood loss, or when you've been worn down for a long time.
A different question
The usual approach says: "Your iron is low, so take more iron."
Chinese medicine asks: "Why isn't your body building blood from what it already gets?"
When your digestion, circulation and nervous system are working well, your body rebuilds blood by itself. This isn't about forcing a number up. It's about your body being able to nourish itself again.
Try it
You can’t read about Qi Gong. You have to feel it.
People often tell me that the Starter Masterclass answered all the questions they had, and showed them what Qi Gong is really about. I can’t give you that in words, not even in a Zoom consultation with me. Qi Gong is something you experience in your own body.
So my advice is simple: start the Starter Masterclass and try it for yourself. If it isn’t for you, you have 14 days to swap it for another masterclass or get a full refund.
Start with the Starter Masterclass →It's not how much you take in. It's how much your body can use.
